Treatment for Antidepressant Abuse and Addiction

Do You or Someone You Love Need Antidepressant Treatment?

Antidepressants are considered to be non-addictive in the sense that larger doses are not required to get the same effect and cravings are not experienced with discontinued use. Even though they are non-habit forming, continued abuse of any drug can result in an addiction. A person addicted to antidepressants will exhibit several symptoms, especially if they are abruptly stopping the abuse. Some antidepressant addiction signs are vivid dreaming, frequent urination, cardiac arrhythmia, dizziness, irritability, headaches, muscle aches, nausea, confused thinking, moodiness, insomnia and depression. If these signs are seen, it can assist in determining if the user needs to go to an antidepressant treatment center.

Beating an antidepressant addiction is tough. The course is complicated, long and arduous, but it can be done. The help of others is definitely needed as this trek should not be attempted alone. Find guidance and help from loved ones, a professional counselor and an antidepressant rehabilitation program to help beat the dependency.

Treatment Plan for Antidepressant Addiction

A person needs to create a treatment team in order to effectively address an antidepressant addiction.  It is made up of four components which include a counselor, loved ones, an antidepressant addiction treatment facility, and a support group.

  • Ask for help – The role in healing that your friends and family can participate in is significant. They will provide support and help when recovery and treatment becomes challenging.
  • Find a therapist – A licensed therapist provides the personal interaction that can help beat the antidepressant addiction and develop a tailored rehab plan. They are also important in making the arrangements to enter an antidepressant treatment facility.
  • Find an antidepressant rehab center – An antidepressant detox program will assist with working through any physical or psychological withdrawal symptoms that arise. It will also help in dealing with any additional co-occurring disorders or addictions.
  • Engage in support groups and ongoing therapy – A support group can provide accountability and guidance which is important. A support group can offer supervision when facing relapse scenarios. They will play a key role in ongoing abstinence.

Treatment Levels for Antidepressant Addiction

It is, at times, quite hard to deal with an antidepressant addiction, because so often other disorders, such as mood disorders, eating disorders, or additional substance abuse, frequently co-occur with an antidepressant addiction. This makes the addiction more difficult to fight. There are several treatment levels that can be offered by an antidepressant treatment center to help end the addiction. Some treatment levels include residential treatment centers, partial hospitalization programs, inpatient programs, and intensive outpatient programs (IOP). The intensity of these levels is more than what is required to overcome an antidepressant addiction, but frequently someone suffering with a co-occurring disorder such as trauma or an eating disorder may require these higher levels. The most common programs to  treat an antidepressant dependency are:

  • Support groups – Support groups provide supervision and direction to prevent relapse. The group can supply much needed care and compassion on the road to recovery.
  • Outpatient care – programs are similar to IOPs but not as concentrated. There are fewer individual limits placed on the patient, but personal treatment and group sessions are still applied.

Types of Therapy for Antidepressant Addiction Treatment

As there are several different treatment levels, there are also multiple types of therapy that can be used to help a person overcome an antidepressant addiction. Repeatedly, a blend of behavior modification therapies are applied by an antidepressant treatment center. These therapies concentrate on the psychological issues of an antidepressant addiction. Some of the treatments included are:

  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) – This type of therapy focuses on the interpersonal relations and societal functions using an encouraging and short-term psychotherapy while trying to help the patient find more effective ways of handling current crisis’ and concerns. The four main parts acknowledged by IPT are role changes, relationship shortcomings, unresolved grief, and role disputes.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – This type of therapy deals with maladaptive patterns of thought in an effort to influence the patient’s conduct with a more constructive approach. This also assists the patient in developing coping skills that replace negative skills with positive ones.
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) – This type of therapy incorporates CBT and IPT behavioral therapies the patient can learn to control their emotions. The introduction of stress management and mindful awareness are key for this therapy.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – This type of cognitive behavioral treatment uses mindfulness and acceptance approaches mixed in multiple ways with strategies of commitment and behavior-change. The emotional and mental flexibility should be increased.
  • Supportive Programs – This includes groups such as the 12 step model similar to Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Other support structures like group therapy, support groups, family therapy, etc. are also part of this group.

Enter into an antidepressant treatment program to accept the assistance required for healing. The tools are available to help maintain the energy, dedication, time, sacrifice, and enthusiasm required to overcome an antidepressant addiction. This complicated path is fraught with many successes and failures. An antidepressant addiction treatment center will help facilitate the smoothing of the ups and downs. It is never too late to get help.
