Valium is a sedative and muscle relaxant that is in the benzodiazepine class of drugs. It is chemically known as diazepam. Valium is a central nervous system depressant that is extremely popular and easy to obtain. Its popularity and availability can lead to its repeated abuse. Valium is both physically and psychologically addictive.  There are multiple symptoms and signs that are displayed when someone is "high" on Valium. Some of the signs will include amnesia, drowsiness, slurred speech, impaired coordination, dizziness, and confusion. A Valium treatment center should be contacted if these indicators are observed so the Valium dependency can be addressed.

Treatment Plan for Valium Addiction

There are multiple factors that are key in the recovery process. Developing a plan of action for ending a Valium addiction is most important. A Valium rehabilitation team needs to be created. This team will consist of a licensed counselor, a Valium treatment center, loved ones and a support group.

  • Friends and Family - Start with family and friends as they will be a vital part in overcoming an addiction. They are an important component in the Valium addiction recovery process.
  • Professional psychologist - A therapist who specializes in Valium addiction will be able to create an individualized Valium detox plan. They will assist in gathering additional resources and entering a Valium treatment center.
  • Valium addiction rehab facility - A Valium treatment program will provide support in dealing with any physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms. It will also assist in addressing any ongoing co-occurring issues.
  • Join a support group - Joining a support group will help contribute to the success of beating an addiction. They will provide assistance when facing the trials of preventing a relapse. They will be important in assisting to continue abstinence.

Valium Treatment Levels

Valium detox treatment can require multiple levels of care to overcome a Valium addiction, and they will vary in type and intensity. The beginning rehab level will be decided by the intensity of the addiction, and any additional co-occurring disorders that are going on at the same time. These various treatment levels may be sought out when a Valium addiction is ongoing with other serious mood disorders, substance abuse, or eating disorders:

  • Inpatient Treatment Level - Inpatient offers hospital care 24 hours a day. The primary focus of this level of care is medical stabilization with stays less than three weeks.
  • Residential Living Level of Care (RTC) - This type of care generally involves a stay for at least 30 days and can be extended for up to 90 days. An RTC will focus on the main issue and any other co-occurring concerns that may also be present.
  • Programs With Limited Hospitalization (PHP) - This type of program is frequently held in a hospital or residential setting and includes attending groups and individual therapy sessions. The program runs five days a week either all morning, all afternoon, or all day.
  • Programs Focused on Intensive Outpatient Care (IOP) - This type of outpatient program offers group and individual services and assistance, and it does not rely on detoxification. It allows the user to participate either in morning or afternoon sessions while continuing some every day functions.
  • Outpatient Management Programs - Outpatient programs are similar to IOPs but not as concentrated. There are fewer individual limits placed on the patient, but personal treatment and group sessions are still applied.
  • Support Group Programs - Support groups fill a valuable role in overcoming an addiction. The guidance they offer is key in prevailing over an addiction.

Types of Therapy for Valium Addiction Treatment

Often, a Valium treatment center will implement various types of therapy to aid someone who is trying to stop a Valium addiction. It is common for a Valium rehab program will include a combination of behavior modification therapies that will focus on the psychological issues of a Valium addiction. Some included treatments are:

  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) - IPT concentrates on the interpersonal relations and social roles using a short-term supportive psychotherapy, and it tries to help patients find better ways to handle and deal with existing issues or problems. IPT identifies role disputes, unresolved grief, relationship shortcomings, and role changes as the four basic areas.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - CBT is a treatment therapy that addresses maladaptive thinking patterns in order to affect the patient’s behavior in a more positive manner. It in turn aids the person in replacing unconstructive coping skills with more constructive ones.
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) - DBT uses the standard behavioral therapies like CBT and IPT for emotion regulation. It combines the stress management and mindful awareness parts of the therapies into the DBT therapy.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) - ACT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies combined in various ways with commitment and behavior-change strategies. This should enhance the emotional and mental flexibility.
  • Supportive Programs - These are programs like the 12 step program Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). It also consists of group therapy, support groups, family therapy, etc.

Take your life back and make a stand against the Valium addiction. Admit there is a problem and seek help from those around you and professionals. The road is hard and full of challenges, but with the support of a Valium addiction treatment center, a professional counselor, and loved ones, the addiction can be defeated. There is much sacrifice, determination and commitment that is required to complete the journey, but you are worth the investment to take your life back.
